Complex systems are being designed and developed in a variety of industries, such as aerospace, defence, railway and automotive. At present, safety analysis of these systems is performed using a traditional approach, based on the interpretation of functional and architectural documentation.


This analytical approach can present several problems in terms of completeness, consistency and subjectivity, and result in safety analysis being performed at a late stage and in an ineffective way.
