In your opinion, what are the main challenges facing the Healthcare & Life Sciences industry?
In general, one of the major challenges facing the Healthcare & Life Sciences sector is the need to attract and retain a skilled workforce. Also, because the global population is increasing and people are living longer, there is a greater number of older patients, who tend to require more healthcare products than younger generations. Today, the emerging countries account for 85% of the world population and are enjoying faster economic growth than the mature markets. There are still a lot of unmet medical needs that must be addressed at the global level. Geographic reorganisation is becoming a key priority in the sector, not only in terms of meeting demand in growth markets and resolving unmet medical needs, but also because of the necessity to attract new skills.
In particular, now that the “Blockbuster” drug era is a thing of the past, the pharmaceuticals industry is being faced with such issues as patent expiry, pricing and market access, the generic threat and a tougher regulatory environment. In addition, innovation and technology are becoming increasingly more complex. To boost the level of new drug approval, the industry must optimise commercial operations and enhance R&D productivity and innovation capacity. New business models are emerging geared to make existing organisations more “agile” and efficient and deliver more sustainable and innovative solutions.
Because patients are now better informed and organised they are able to express their needs in a more direct way. Increased demand for specialised services, in terms of healthcare, treatment and drugs, is putting more pressure on prescribers, regulators, payers and pharmaceutical companies. “Patient in focus” is still a challenge that the Healthcare & Life Sciences industry needs to address. The industry will be able to leverage growth not only from changing demographic trends but also by managing the vast amount of information generated thanks to technological progress that is being made in the fields of science and information technology.
